Baeckea brevifolia [Myrtaceae]As a big fan of B. imbricata and B. linifolia, I thought I knew my Sydney Baeckeas pretty well. But to my surprise I literally stumbled upon this species in 2023 on an enourmous rocky outcrop in Duffy’s forest. After a scramble to its top, just to see what’s there, I found a species that I had never seen or heard of, growing directly on monolithic Hawkesbury Sandstone in the shallowest divots and depressions.
Mounding in form, physically structured, but visually soft & pillowy. We are working with a local nursery to get this into cultivation through the proper channels.
Considering how easy it is to grow other Baeckeas when given enough water & some formative pruning (i.e. those mentioned above plus the more common species like B. virgata), I’m hopeful for this species.
